NCAA Tournament 1st round thoughts...

This is the best four days of the year, without a doubt. For the fifth consecutive year I have purchased the DirecTV tournament package, not worked and sat down to watch basketball for four straight days. On the right is a pic from last year's set up, this year is similar but I sent my wife and child to the in-laws to keep them from distracting me! (just kidding honey)

Through 17 games here are some of my expert thoughts...

1. Thursday sucked. 16 games, 15 of them having the higher seed win. The most exciting moment of the day was Duke beating Belmont in the last few seconds. Whoo freaking hoo, I get to watch Duke win. Duke can suck it.

2. Kansas State over USC was a great game to watch. Beasley will look awfully good in a Timberwolves uniform. His hands must be massive cause those mitts just command the ball, it looks like a bear claw grabbing the ball. As I type they are losing to Wisconsin but Beasley is incredible.

3. Question - if Kentucky would have upset Marquette as an 11 seed, would Tubby have been given any credit for the talent he put on the floor? Fortunately for Kentucky fans they can continue to blame Tubby for the lack of talent on the floor for UK. Nevermind that seniors Ramel Bradley(19) and Joe Crawford (35) were recruited as part of a top 5 class by Tubby and they combined for 81.8% of UK's points on Thursday.

4. Big Ten dominates going 3-0 on day 1. Indiana went out of character on Friday and lost a 1st round game but 3-1 for a league that has been ripped all year was nice to see. Wis/KSt and MSU/Pitt will be big games and should be fun to watch.

5. UNLV is the only other team in the tourney that Minnesota faced this season and they won their 8/9 battle with Kent State. They held the Golden Flashes to 10 first half points, which was boring and a shot clock era record. (pic on right stolen from College Cheeleader)

6. Washington State vs. Winthrop was looking like it was going to be VERY interesting through the first half. But something awoke the Cougars and they throttled Wintrhop 42-11 in the second half. Winthrop has officially changed their mascot from the Eagles to the Monkey Stomped.

7. Finally, what the hell is wrong with UCLA. How did they allow 16 points to Miss Valley State in the first half? The second half was better as they kept them to 13. Fortunately for them they did allow 30 for the game or there would have been hell to pay in practice on Friday.

FRIDAY GAMES and thoughts...

1. Friday was crazy with 6 upsets in 16 games. This was more like it and the reason I pay to have access to all of the games.

2. Indiana ended what could have been a perfect opening round for the Big Ten. Obviously this team hasn't been the same since the Sampson incident, but the talent level is there to beat a team like Arkansas.

3. On a related note, I want to go on record to say that Eric Gordon will not be a great pro. I think he is an incredible college athlete who would dominate the Big Ten next year and could have a monster NCAA tournament to put 2008 behind him. But at the NBA level I don't see him being quick enough to defend or to penetrate like he is able to do at this level. He is quick but not explosive. In the NCAAs he is a step to a step and a half quicker than most guys on the floor. In the NBA I think he'll be a 1/2 step slower than guys at his position. Great shooter but won't be able to score or defend imo. I could be wrong and I have no reason to not want him to do well, I just would personally be upset to see him drafted on my favorite NBA team.

4. A couple of clutch baskets by some unknowns has once again made this tournament everything we hope it will be every year. San Diego's De'Jon Jackson (pictured left) hit a step back two which put away #4 seed UCONN. And everybody's favorite Hilltoppers used a Ty Rogers (pictured left) three at the buzzer to ruin everyone's bracket who had Drake in the Final Four.

5. North Carolina bumped Purdue to the second highest scoring game after they dropped in 113 on some irrelevant team. UNC can score with anybody, but I still see them falling before they get to he Final Four. Defense is just OK and they go through stretches where they lose interest. I see them falling sooner rather than later. On the other hand I respect Roy Williams more than any other coach in the country and that alone is enough to get them to San Antonio.

6. Davidson's Stephen Curry (pictured right) was incredible. 30 second half points to take down the house (of cards) that Dan Monson built. And his mom is kinda hot.

7. Friday was a safe day for all of the 1, 2 and 3 seeds as they all breezed to the Sunday games. But the 4s and 5s were obviously tenuous positions to be in. But that is what makes this tourney so much fun.

ROUND 2 - Saturday

It is early but Duke whithered down the stretch to West Virginia. I care nothing for the Mountaineers but suck it Duke.

My predictions...

I know this isn't exactly going out on a limb but I have felt all along and still feel that Kansas and UCLA will meet in the Championship game.

Teams who may make that surprise Final Four run? - A couple Big Ten teams are capable of making a run.

  • MSU is balanced and has the Neitzel factor.
  • Wisconsin plays great D and is the definition of team on offense.
  • Villanova could make a run cause they don't know they aren't supposed to.
  • Washington State is a top 10 talent and just needs to put it together for a few games.
  • West Virginia scores a ton and play great D. They have already dispatched their #2 seed obstacle.
That is enough information for today.

Bad Day...Better Day

Friday was not such a good day for Gophers competing at the national level.

Men's Golf - entered Friday morning sitting 1 stroke behind the tournament leader Stanford (MN was -6 through those 2 rounds). What did this group of Golden Gophers do on Friday? Well they went +14 and dropping from 2nd to 8th and essentially nullified any chance of winning the tournament.

Baseball - the baseball team opened their NCAA Regional against traditional power Cal-State Fullerton. It wasn't pretty for Minnesota as Cal-State cruised to a 7-1 victory. CSF's Wes Roemer had the Gophers guessing all day as he went 9 innings allowing 1 earned run and recording 7 strikeouts. A 5-run 4th inning for CSF really put MN in a hole that they just couldn't get out of.

Saturday was a better day...

Men's Golf - the team actually dropped 1 position in the standings but it was a much more respectable day as they shot +5 and finished in the top 10 for the second consecutive year. Soph. Victor Almstrom was the top Gopher finisher at 15th overall. Of the 5 Golden Gophers 2 will be graduating so there is a decent nucleus returning. But congratulations to Brad James and his golfers for another fine season.

Baseball - Things looked ominous for the Gophers as the #1 seed was upset yesterday and thus had a date with Minnesota today. This game was interesting but Minnesota managed to sneak out the win and bounce the host San Diego Toreros from the tournament. Minnesota took a 5-0 lead into the 9th inning. Put that game in the bag right? Wrong. San Diego knocked in 5 runs on 4 hits before Oslin came in to pitch and get the remaining 2 outs. Fortunately Minnesota came through in the 10th inning as freshman Derek McCallum singled with the bases loaded to give MN the W. Tomorrow they will face the loser of Fresno State and Cal-State Fullerton. It looks to be a tough day for Minnesota as they will need to win 3 games tomorrow to advance through the Regionals to next weekend's Super Regionals.

Golden Gophers at the National level...

Baseball - Time for Gopher Nation to get on a plane for San Diego. After finishing 2nd in the Big Ten regular standings then losing to Ohio State in the B10 Tournament championship game, Minnesota earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Minnesota is a #3 seed in the 4-team San Diego regional, they will face perennial power Cal-State Fullerton on Friday. This appears to be a difficult regional but the Gophers advancing to the Super Regionals is not out of the question.

  • #1-San Diego (43-16) - ranked #4 in the country according to Baseball America and is seeded 8th overall in the NCAA tournament.
  • #2-Cal State Fullerton (33-23) - finished 5th in the Big West at 10-11, but don't let that fool you as they are in a very competitive conference and this will be a good test for the Gophers. I'll look deeper into CSF with a minor preview later this week.
  • #3-Minnesota (40-16) - 2nd in the Big Ten and played in their 7th consecutive Big Ten conference Championship game.
  • #4-Fresno State (36-27) - back to back WAC Tournament Champs.
Gopher Golf in Virginia - if you can't make it to San Diego (or if you are just waiting for Omaha) you can represent Gopher Nation in Williamsburg, Virginia to watch the Golden Gopher Men's golf team compete in the NCAA Championships. After winning a playoff over Texas A&M at the regionals the golden golfers advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 27th time in team history. The 2002 NCAA Champs and after a 3rd place finish in 2006 they will have some ground to make up after finishing 10th in the regional, but stranger things have happened.

Men's and Women's Track athletes who have earned automatic berths into the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento (June 6-9). At large berths will be announces later this week...

Derek Gearman - Triple Jump
Adam Schnaible - Shot Put

Ruby Radocaj - Javelin
Heather Dornidin - 800M - set Regional record
Emily Brown - 3000M Steeplechase
Liz Podominick - Discus
Liz Alabi - Shot Put

Congrats to the Golden Gopher rowing squad for their 6th place finish at the NCAA Championships.

My Thoughts on College Basketball

Dear Commissioner Stern - I'd like to thank you for the 2006-07 NCAA Basketball season. I know you are primarily an NBA guy, but I think you are responsible for this year's college season. Just wanted to thank you.
This has been a great year in college basketball in my opinion and I would largely attribute this season's success to the NBA rule requiring kids to play at least 1 season of college hoops before becoming eligible for the NBA draft. Tonight's championship game features the 2 best teams in the country for most of the 06-07 season.

Ohio State - The Buckeyes are a unique mix of super talented Freshmen and veterans who contribute greatly to the success of this team. Greg Oden is the best Center in the country and a LOCK to be one of the top 2 pick in the NBA draft. Had Oden been 1 year older, we never would have seen him at the college level as he would surely have gone straight to the NBA. Mike Conley Jr. is another super freshman for the Buckeyes who is a blast to watch and I think will be in the conversation for player of the year in 2007-08.

Florida
- The Gators are a team of super talented Juniors. Defending national champs who returned their top 7 players. Florida's top 5 players all will likely be drafted with a couple of them expected to be impact players in the NBA.

I cannot attribute Florida's talent to Commissioner Stern, but without the NBA's 19 yr old eligibility rule the Gator's opponent would likely be someone like UCLA who they dismantled on Saturday by 10 (and the game was not nearly that close).

You can argue all day long that this rule is unfair, kids who are that talented should be allowed to earn money while they are able. I won't disagree with you from an economic standpoint, but from the fan's perspective I think this is great for all involved. The overall talent at the college level is much better (AP player of the year was freshman Kevin Durrant) and this NBA draft looks to be one of the best in years. Hopefully NBA teams won't be required to spend 3 years on a high school player before he becomes a contributor to their team.

Ultimately I am a fan of increased overall talent at the college level (Durrant, Oden, Conley Jr, Brendan Wright, Chase Budinger, etc.). Most if not all of the players mentioned would never have stepped foot on a college campus were it not for this rule. I think their NBA careers will develop quicker by taking the transitional step of college basketball rather than the leap from high school to the NBA.

This has been one of the best overall seasons of NCAA basketball in recent memory. Now if we could just make the Gopher men's hoops relevant again!
